A subset of historic properties, historic structures are bridges, mines, highways, ships, and other structures that are designated historic by the National Register of Historic Places. For a structure to qualify as historic according to National Register criteria, it must be associated with historically significant events or the lives of significant people. Not only that, but historic structures must have also yielded information that was important for history and feature characteristics of the period during which they were built and the current methods of construction during those times. At least one of these criteria must be met before the National Register designates a structure as historic. Historic structures can also be recognized when they are not listed in the National Register of Historic Places. When structures are individually listed on either a local or state inventory of historic places, they are usually regarded as historic. The same is true of structures that are certified as having contributed to the historical significance of a historic district. However, these structures must be recognized as being individually historically significant. If they are part of a larger building, as is the case with an apartment unit, the single structure is usually not recognized as historic.
